Problem
Tania, a U.S. Army Gulf War veteran, was navigating a series of major life changes after a recent divorce. As a single mother, she was adjusting to the loss of household income while remaining fully employed and providing for her family.
At the same time, her 14-year-old son had been admitted to the Fort Belvoir Partial Hospitalization Program for treatment. With her attention focused on supporting his recovery, Tania found it difficult to keep pace with all of her financial obligations. She requested one-time assistance with her automobile insurance and Verizon bill to help her family through this challenging period.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Tania's circumstances and verified that the financial hardship resulted from the combined impact of her recent divorce and the demands of caring for her son. In addition to requesting emergency financial assistance, VVFS assisted her in pursuing a VA disability claim, enrolled her in a state-funded behavioral health program, and connected her with Cook for Vets to provide monthly food deliveries.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to help pay her outstanding automobile insurance and Verizon bills.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped ease immediate financial pressure during a difficult transition, allowing Tania to focus on what mattered most—supporting her son's health issues while continuing to provide for her family.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance helped prevent a temporary financial setback from becoming a larger crisis. Combined with behavioral health services, food assistance, and help pursuing VA benefits, the grant provided meaningful support as Tania and her family worked toward greater stability and a brighter future.
