Reliable Transportation Restored During a Difficult Transition

Problem

Jorge, a 52-year-old Army veteran living in Prince William County, faced a series of significant financial setbacks within a short period of time. After losing his full-time employment, he secured part-time work while continuing to search for stable, long-term employment. At the same time, his wife moved out of the home during the family's financial hardship, leaving him solely responsible for outstanding household expenses. 

Although he was not yet receiving VA disability benefits, he had already been referred to begin his initial VA benefits claim. With a monthly income of only $900, unexpected expenses quickly became overwhelming. 

His most immediate challenge was his vehicle. Reliable transportation was essential for attending medical appointments and traveling to employment interviews, yet his car required major repairs. While his vehicle warranty covered much of the repair cost, he remained responsible for a balance of almost $1,700—an amount he simply could not afford. 

Action

Recognizing that dependable transportation was critical to the veteran's health care and employment efforts, the Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) program submitted a referral requesting one-time emergency financial assistance. 

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227 reviewed the request and approved financial assistance to cover the veteran's remaining repair balance. Funding provided through the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) made it possible for payment to be issued directly to the repair facility, ensuring the vehicle repairs could be completed without additional delay. 

Outcome & Impact

With his vehicle restored to safe operating condition, Jorge regained dependable transportation needed to attend medical appointments and continue pursuing employment opportunities. The one-time assistance removed a financial obstacle that could have delayed both his health care and his search for long-term work. 

This case demonstrates how timely emergency financial assistance can help stabilize a veteran during a period of unexpected hardship. By addressing an urgent transportation need, VVFS, VVA Chapter 227, and NVVVF worked together to help ensure that a temporary financial crisis did not become a lasting barrier to recovery and future self-sufficiency.
