Preventing a Temporary Setback from Becoming Homelessness
Problem
Sheila, a U.S. Army veteran, lives on a limited fixed income from Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Because of ongoing medical issues, she is unable to work and must carefully manage every monthly expense.
When she received an electric bill that was much higher than expected, it disrupted her household budget and left her unable to pay her rent on time. Although the amount needed was relatively small, falling behind on rent placed her housing at risk and threatened to turn a temporary financial hardship into a much more serious crisis.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Sheila's circumstances and verified that the unexpected utility expense had created a temporary financial emergency. Recognizing that prompt intervention could help her remain safely housed, VVFS requested one-time emergency financial assistance.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to help cover the overdue rent balance.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped Sheila remain current on her housing expenses despite the unexpected increase in utility costs. By addressing the immediate shortfall, the assistance preserved her housing stability and relieved the financial pressure created by an unforeseen expense.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented a temporary setback from becoming a housing crisis. The grant helped ensure that an elderly veteran living on a fixed income could continue living safely and independently with greater peace of mind and financial stability.
