Problem
Marie, a U.S. Army veteran, was living with a service-connected disability and relied on VA disability compensation and Social Security as her sole sources of income. Living on a fixed budget left little room for unexpected expenses.
When a plumbing problem developed in her home, the cost of repairs created an immediate financial hardship. Addressing the issue promptly was important to maintaining a safe and functional living environment, but paying for the repair outright was beyond her available resources.
Action
After being contacted by the Chairman of the Northern Virginia Regional Human Rights Council, a Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Marie's circumstances and verified her need for emergency assistance. The referral noted that the Human Rights Council had obtained estimates from multiple vendors to ensure the repair would be completed at the best available cost.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to cover the full cost of the plumbing repair.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant enabled Marie to complete a necessary home repair without placing additional strain on her limited monthly income. By resolving the plumbing issue quickly, the assistance helped preserve the safety and livability of her home while allowing her to continue living independently.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented an unexpected home repair from becoming a larger financial burden.
