Keeping a Veteran Moving Forward
Problem
Darin faced a series of unexpected financial setbacks after losing his job in 2025. Although he found temporary work as a Lyft driver, the income was not enough to fully meet his financial obligations. His situation became even more difficult when the SNAP benefits his family depended on for food were stolen.
Separated from his spouse, Darin shares responsibility for caring for their two young children each afternoon and evening while their mother attends nursing school full time. His vehicle is essential—not only for earning income through Lyft, but also for picking up and caring for his children. When he fell behind on his car payment, he risked losing the transportation that supported both his livelihood and his family responsibilities.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Regional Coordinator reviewed Darin's circumstances and verified that he was actively working to support himself while longer-term solutions were being explored. Recognizing that maintaining reliable transportation was critical to both his employment and his ability to care for his children, VVFS requested emergency assistance.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to cover the overdue automobile loan payment.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped Darin keep the vehicle he depended on to earn income and meet his family responsibilities. By preserving reliable transportation, the assistance enabled him to continue working while caring for his children during a challenging period of financial transition.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented a temporary financial hardship from becoming a larger crisis. The grant provided an opportunity for Darin to continue supporting his family while working toward long-term financial stability.
