Helping a Veteran Stay Home

Problem

Hannah experienced a medical emergency that resulted in substantial medical expenses. Because the treatment was received without prior authorization, the VA declined to cover the costs, leaving her responsible for an unexpected debt.

Unable to work because of her service-connected disabilities, Hannah relies solely on VA disability compensation for her income. The unexpected medical bills created a financial hardship that made it difficult to keep up with her monthly mortgage payments, putting her housing stability at risk.

Action

A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Hannah's circumstances and verified that the financial hardship stemmed from the unexpected medical debt. Recognizing that the situation threatened her ability to remain current on her mortgage, VVFS requested emergency assistance on her behalf.

The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to cover one month's mortgage payment.

Outcome & Impact

The one-time mortgage assistance helped relieve the immediate financial pressure caused by the unexpected medical expenses and allowed Hannah to remain focused on her health and recovery rather than the possibility of falling behind on her housing obligations.

Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented a temporary financial crisis from becoming a more serious housing challenge. The grant provided the stability needed for Hannah to continue moving forward while managing the long-term effects of her service-connected disabilities.
