Problem
Diamond made the difficult decision to leave California and relocate to Virginia with her young child after experiencing domestic violence. While the move provided safety and a fresh start, the costs of relocating and obtaining legal assistance placed a significant strain on her finances.
As she worked to rebuild her life, Diamond fell behind on her electric utility bill and faced the possibility of having her service disconnected. Restoring financial stability while creating a secure home for her child became an immediate priority.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Diamond's circumstances and verified that her financial hardship resulted from the extraordinary expenses associated with relocating to safety and pursuing legal assistance. Recognizing the urgency of preventing a utility disconnection, VVFS requested emergency financial assistance.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to help satisfy the outstanding electric utility balance and prevent a disruption of service.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped preserve essential utility service at a time when Diamond and her child were working to establish a safe and stable home. By removing the immediate financial pressure of an overdue utility bill, the assistance allowed her to focus on rebuilding her life rather than worrying about losing electricity.
