Problem
Darryl., a U.S. Army veteran, was experiencing homelessness and living at a shelter in Reston. Working with his case manager, he had secured affordable housing with a move-in date at the end of April—a significant step toward rebuilding his independence.
One final obstacle remained. To keep his personal belongings until he could move into his new home, Darryl needed assistance paying a single month's storage fee. Without that support, he risked losing the possessions he would need as he transitioned from homelessness to permanent housing.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist worked with Darryl to assess his needs and identify resources that would help move him toward long-term stability. In addition to providing a clothing voucher through Goodwill, VVFS was also developing a VA pension claim for which the veteran appeared eligible based on his wartime service.
The request for emergency assistance was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227. Through charitable contributions raised by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF), a grant was approved to cover the veteran's storage costs through the end of April, ensuring his belongings would be available when he moved into his new residence.
Outcome & Impact
Although the financial request was modest, its impact was meaningful. The one-time grant removed the final barrier preventing Darryl from completing his transition from emergency shelter to permanent housing.
With a move-in date secured, his storage needs addressed, and additional VA benefits being pursued, Darryl had a clear path toward greater stability. By responding quickly to a small but critical need, the partnership between VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation helped a veteran take an important step from homelessness toward a more secure future.
