A Safe Place While Waiting
Problem
Steven, a U.S. Army veteran, was experiencing homelessness after being evicted following an assault by his landlord. Because of physical health conditions, he was unable to stay in a traditional homeless shelter and instead required lodging that could accommodate his medical needs while allowing him to remain close to his healthcare providers.
At the time of the referral, Steven had no income and was waiting for his first Social Security Disability payment, which he had been told would begin in mid-June. Although another charitable organization had temporarily covered his hotel stay, that assistance was ending before his disability benefits would begin, leaving him at risk of once again becoming homeless.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist worked closely with Steven to develop a plan for long-term stability. The referral noted that he had been an active participant in every service offered and was working with both veteran and community organizations to secure permanent housing.
To bridge the gap until his disability income began, VVFS requested emergency financial assistance and referred the request to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227. Through charitable contributions raised by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF), emergency assistance was approved to extend Steven's hotel stay through mid-June, providing safe, accessible lodging while he awaited his first disability payment and continued pursuing permanent housing.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant prevented a return to homelessness during a critical period of transition. By ensuring that Steven could remain in safe, accessible housing while waiting for his disability income, the assistance provided stability at a time when it was needed most.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance helped bridge the gap between crisis and long-term stability. Combined with ongoing efforts to secure permanent housing and additional community resources, the grant allowed Steven to continue moving forward with dignity, hope, and the support needed to rebuild his future.
