A Place to Call Home
Problem
John, a Vietnam Era veteran, and his wife had been living with their daughter and her three children while searching for a place of their own. After finding an affordable studio apartment, they were eager to begin this new chapter but needed assistance with the first month's rent.
Although the couple planned to move forward regardless of whether assistance was available, the cost of the initial rent placed a strain on their limited monthly income. A one-time grant would help ease the financial burden as they worked to reestablish an independent home.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed the couple's circumstances and helped identify additional resources to support their long-term well-being. In addition to evaluating the request for housing assistance, VVFS assisted the veteran in applying for increased in-home VA care and connected the couple with no-cost transportation for medical appointments.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to help cover the first month's rent for their new apartment.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time rent assistance helped make the couple's transition into their own home more manageable, reducing the financial pressure associated with establishing a new residence. By helping with this critical first step, the grant supported their goal of living independently while remaining connected to the community resources available to them.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance helped a Vietnam Era veteran and his wife move forward with greater stability, dignity, and confidence as they began a new chapter together
