A Fresh Start After an Unexpected Move
Problem
YB, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with a 100% VA disability rating, relocated to Virginia to care for her daughter after her daughter's health was affected by toxin exposure in their previous residence. As she worked to establish a new life, another unexpected challenge arose when a substantial rent increase forced her to leave her home.
Although YB found a more affordable apartment, the cost of relocating exhausted her available savings. Faced with the financial demands of moving, she no longer had the resources to cover the next month's rent or other basic living expenses. The referral also noted that she continues to experience the effects of a traumatic brain injury, including dizziness and memory loss, making it even more difficult to recover from an unexpected financial setback.
Action
Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) worked closely with YB to assess her circumstances and identify available resources. Multiple requests for assistance were submitted to other veteran service organizations, but each was declined because of funding limitations or service area restrictions.
VVFS then referred the request to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227. Through charitable contributions raised by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF), emergency financial assistance was approved to help cover one month's rent, providing the veteran with the financial breathing room needed to regain stability.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time rent assistance helped protect YB's newly secured housing at a critical time. By easing the financial burden created by an unexpected move, the grant allowed her to focus on rebuilding her financial stability rather than worrying about the possibility of falling behind on rent.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented a temporary financial hardship from becoming a larger housing crisis. The support helped provide the stability needed for YB to continue caring for herself and her family while moving forward with confidence and hope.
