A Foundation for Recovery
Problem
Robert, an Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran, was working to rebuild his life after seeking treatment for alcohol dependency related to the effects of a severe traumatic brain injury. Following a public intoxication incident, he voluntarily entered a detoxification program and was then accepted into a six-week residential treatment program focused on recovery from traumatic brain injury and substance abuse.
Although Robert remained employed and his supervisor was holding his position while he completed treatment, his absence from work created an immediate financial challenge. Unable to earn his regular income during treatment, he needed assistance with his share of the monthly rent to maintain stable housing while focusing on his recovery.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist met personally with Robert and his Fairfax County caseworker to assess his situation and coordinate assistance. In addition to requesting emergency rent assistance, VVFS enrolled him in VA health care, secured a credit toward his Dominion Energy account, and worked with Fairfax County and other nonprofit organizations to ensure that the cost of his treatment program was covered.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to cover Robert's portion of the monthly rent while he completed treatment.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped preserve Robert's housing during a critical stage of his recovery. By relieving the immediate financial burden of rent, the assistance allowed him to remain focused on completing treatment with the confidence that he would have a stable place to return to afterward.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance supported a veteran who had chosen recovery and was surrounded by people committed to his success. Combined with treatment, health care enrollment, and strong community support, the grant helped provide a solid foundation for Robert to return to work, reunite with his community, and move forward with hope and renewed purpose.
